This pendant with a Roman shield motif is made of lead-free pewter. The shield comes on a chain. The pendant is mounted on a folding information card which displays a gold coin and the head of Medusa on the front along with an ornamental design on the sides. On the reverse, the card describes the development and influences of Roman jewellery.
This beautiful collection of hand-cast jewellery is inspired by designs found in ancient Rome. Richly decorated jewelry was initially rare due to the scarcity of gold, but as the empire expanded, trade routes and military campaigns expanded, precious metals and stones became more readily available.
Roman jewellery was mostly made of gold or silver and bore influences from Greek and Etruscan culture. Gradually, new designs inspired by other cultures emerged and became firmly established during the Roman Empire.
