Ampullae were small round vessels used for sacred purposes in ancient Rome. The word is used in archaeology. The Latin name for the flask, which has caught on to the present day, is ampulla. Ceramic flasks were widespread in antiquity.
For example, analyses have shown that the flask preserved residues of organic matter containing a mixture of millet with a small amount of berries and dairy products, in addition to a small amount of coniferous resin in the composition.
The researchers do not rule out the possibility that the flask may have been filled with some kind of elixir brewed specifically for a ritual ceremony.
