Brass buckle "Spartan Shield".
The buckle represents the Aspis Shield, also known as Hoplon. The Hoplon, better known as the Spartan Shield, is a round convex shield of the ancient Greek hoplites. It is with this shield that the famous phrase "Return with the shield or ride it" is associated. Fleeing the battlefield - and therefore losing the shield - was considered one of the worst crimes in ancient Greece and was severely punished. Therefore, a warrior had to return either with a shield (as a victor) or on a shield (i.e. fallen in battle).
The buckle is cast in brass. After casting, each buckle is hand-worked. It is then patinated and re-polished. The buckle is supplied with a brass frame in a choice of two sizes (38mm and 45mm) for later attachment to the belt.
