Viking set of fittings for bag closure
This Viking satchel fitting set has been made to historical designs and includes a strap grommet, strap end and a decorative plate for the lid of the satchel.
The historical pattern for this Viking closure came from the Swedish village of Ås, with the original being roughly half the size of our replica. The end of the strap is inspired by a Borre style find.
The diamond-shaped decorative plates (fittings) on the lids of Viking-period satchels are also known from Birka and from areas of present-day Russia and have their origins in Hungarian designs.
To close a Viking satchel, the grommet on the strap is attached to the body of the satchel and the decorative plate to the lid. A leather strap is threaded through the grommet and fitted with an end cap, making it easier to close the satchel.
