The historical predecessor of this Viking pin with a peacock motif is a find from the Danish village of Toftegård near Vindinge Herred, dated to the 11th century AD.
In addition to this peacock pin from Denmark, other similar examples are known, for example from Trondheim in Norway. The original brooch is now in the collections of the Danish National Museum in Copenhagen.
Bird motifs appear quite frequently in 11th century art. According to art historical studies, they are partly based on the influence of the early Romanesque art that was developing at the time - for example, from the Byzantine cultural circle - as well as the Christian symbolism of the time.
The artistic elaboration by Viking craftsmen then led to the more frequent depiction of bird motifs in Scandinavian art.
The back of the brooch has a fixed needle, which allows it to be used on thicker fabrics.
The dimensions of the brooch are 5,5 × 4,5 cm.
