This Viking Age sax knife (also known as a seax due to its characteristic blade shape) features a long, hand-forged high-carbon steel blade with a thick spine. The blade is not fully polished, and traces of oxide scale and forging marks remain visible on its surface.
The handle is made of polished bone and decorated with engravings depicting the two faithful ravens of the god Odin – Huginn and Muninn – along with their names in Norse runes. In Norse mythology, these ravens fly over Asgard and Midgard and return each evening to the Allfather of the Gods, also called Hrafnáss (“Raven God”), to tell him everything they have seen and heard. The raven motif is a common element in Viking and Celtic art.
The long Viking seax comes with a beautiful sheath made of sturdy, vegetable-tanned leather, decorated with hand-tooled Norse-style ornamentation and complemented by antiqued brass fittings, including two suspension rings. The twin raven motif from the handle is repeated on one side of the sheath. Each raven is cast in brass and attached with rivets.
Although fully functional, the knife edge is only lightly sharpened and can be further honed if greater sharpness is required. Please note that this scramasax is primarily intended as a collector’s or decorative piece and is not suitable for combat reenactment.
