The Francisca was a typical throwing axe of the Franks, used mainly in the early Middle Ages during the 5th-7th centuries. This weapon was characterized by a short shaft and a curved blade head. Its shape made it ideal for throwing at short range just before a clash of armies.
Frankish warriors threw the frank at enemy shields or into the ranks. Upon impact, the axe often stuck in the shield or bounced off, disrupting the enemy's defenses and causing confusion in their formation. This tactical element gave the Franks an advantage in subsequent close combat.
