Medieval badge - Lamb of God (Agnus Dei)
England, 14th century
Brass cast. Dimensions: 60 × 60 mm
This pilgrim badge depicts the Lamb of God (Agnus Dei) - one of the most famous and sacred symbols of Christ in Christian iconography. The motif is based on the words of John the Baptist, spoken at Jesus' baptism in the Jordan River:
"Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world"(John 1:29).
The Lamb is traditionally depicted with a banner of victory and often stands on a book with seven seals, referring to the Apocalypse. It symbolizes Christ's sacrifice, innocence, and the redemption of humanity through death and resurrection. The Agnus Dei became a common motif on the badges of pilgrims, especially those who visited important pilgrimage sites associated with the Eucharist or the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Badges with this motif were not only an expression of faith and personal consecration, but also a protective amulet worn by pilgrims on their clothing or hat. Many were blessed in churches to serve as a spiritual reminder of the pilgrimage and as a means of spiritual protection.
Based on the book "Pilgrim Souvenirs and Secular Badges" by Brian Spencer.
Brass casting. Dimensions: 60 × 60 mm.
