Valaska is a shepherd’s axe traditionally associated with the Vlachs. It has always had a truly versatile use. Its origins lie in the mountainous regions from the Beskydy Mountains in Moravia through the Tatras to the vast arcs of the Carpathians, where it served as a daily tool for shepherds and a symbol of their culture. The valaska is not only practical but also represents freedom and the status of a mountain dweller. It was often decorated with engravings or metalwork, making it a personal item.
Uses: personal, hunting and throwing weapon, walking stick, cutting branches for fodder, slaughtering sheep, and as an attribute of armed dances and a distinctive part of traditional costume.
