Celtic short sword with scabbard, 3rd-2nd century BC.

Swords with anthropomorphic hilts are one of the rarest archaeological finds. This leads to the suggestion that these weapons may have been ceremonial in nature and reserved exclusively for warriors of higher rank. The limited size of these daggers and swords (approximately 50-70 cm) further supports this theory. Nevertheless, they remained fully functional and could serve as backup weapons to longer swords. The profile of the hilt was initially quite schematic, but during the 2nd century BC its human form became more pronounced, often with a pommel shaped like a human head.

The sword is fitted with a copper guard, a brass and bone hilt and a steel blade.

This sword is intended as a collector's or decorative exhibit, and in addition to its value to collectors, it is also well suited as a prop, for example to complement a historical costume.

  • Blade material: spring steel EN45 (carbon steel, not stainless steel)

  • Handle material: copper, brass and bone

  • Overall length: approx. 63 cm

  • Blade length: approx. 46 cm

  • Weight: approx. 1.1 kg

  • Including leather sheath

Specifications may vary slightly from piece to piece.

The steel used is not stainless and may show light surface discolouration in places. We recommend regular maintenance of the blade, for example with Ballistol all-purpose oil, which is ideal for the care of steel.
