The Montefortino helmet is a type of Celtic war helmet that first appeared in the 4th century B.C. It takes its name from the archaeological site of Montefortino in Italy, where it was first identified. The helmet was made of bronze and had a simple but effective shape - a hemispherical helmet with a distinctive central spike or knob, often with the option of attaching a chochol. The back was extended into a neck-protecting muzzle, with holes at the sides for hanging cheekpieces. Montefort helmets are an example of the high level of Celtic craftsmanship and also evidence of cultural exchange, as their design was adopted by the Romans. They remained common in the armour of the Roman army until the 1st century AD. They served not only as protection in battle but also as a symbol of status and military affiliation. Today they are prized by archaeologists and collectors alike.
