This short sword is a detailed replica of a Roman gladius that was discovered during archaeological excavations in the Danube River near the village of Dubravica in Serbia in the 1950s. It is believed that the original owner was a Roman legionary or a member of the auxiliary forces.
The reconstruction is equipped with an approximately 55 cm long, double-edged, high carbon steel blade, the shape of which corresponds to the classic 'Mainz ' type gladius. The blade has a flat, diamond-shaped cross-section and a long, sharply pointed tip with a lance-shaped to leaf-shaped profile. A distinctive central rib runs the length of the blade. The blade is not sharpened and the full tang blade is fixed to the pommel by a screw.
The handle, guard and pommel are made entirely of wood. A distinctive feature of this gladius is the four bronze rings at the top of the pommel, which probably had rank or ceremonial significance. Another striking detail is the brass plate set into the side of the guard facing the blade.
The Roman short sword comes with a beautiful wooden scabbard covered in red leather and complete with brass fittings. The two upper bands are fitted with brass hanging rings, allowing the gladius to be worn in authentic Roman style.
This Roman sword is intended as a collector's or decorative piece and, in addition to its value to collectors, is also excellent as a prop, for example to complete a historical costume.
