A ferrocerium flint is a tool that you use to start a fire with a spark. The principle of flinting is not complicated. It is based on rubbing (flinting) the throttle (tinder) on the rod, which creates sparks that ignite the prepared combustible base. There are a number of names for flint such as firesteel, army flint, survival flint, but the principle of starting a fire remains the same. Most experienced travellers carry a flint with them at all times and cannot afford to let it fail. The main advantage is the fire starting regardless of the surrounding conditions, light weight and small size.
