The pentagram, the five-pointed star, is one of the oldest and most universal symbols of human culture. Its history dates back thousands of years to ancient Mesopotamia, where it was used as a protective emblem and as a symbol of power and order. Over time, the pentagram has appeared in various civilizations - for the Greeks, it represented harmony and perfection, particularly through its association with mathematics and the golden ratio. In mystical traditions it acquired a deeper meaning: the five points were associated with the five elements - earth, water, fire, air and spirit.
In the Middle Ages, the pentagram became a symbol of protection against evil forces and was often used in magical rituals. Later, it was sometimes mistakenly associated with dark practices, especially when reversed. Yet it retains an ambivalent meaning to this day - it can symbolise protection and balance as well as the mysteries and hidden forces of the universe.
