This sword ("gladius" in Latin) was found inMainz, Germany, and has a leaf-shaped, double-edged blade. It was equally effective at slashing and stabbing, making it an ideal sword for close combat.
The lightweight faux ivory handle is characteristic of this type of gladius , and the guard prevents the hand from slipping on the blade after a strong point. The spherical pommel then keeps the hand firmly on the hilt even during strong slashes. A scabbard with decorative brass appliqués is included with this type of gladio from Mainz.
