The wolf, known as the gumpi in Northern Sami, is seen as a powerful symbol of wild nature, independence and spiritual power.
In traditional Sami cosmology, the world is divided into several levels connected by spiritual forces. Animals in this system are not mere objects of the hunt, but bearers of a spiritual essence. The wolf is seen as a being moving on the borderline between the human and non-human worlds. Its ability to survive in the extreme conditions of the north and its social structure in the form of packs have contributed to its symbolic significance.
Wolf motifs also appear on shamanic drums (goavddis), which serve as a means of communication with the spiritual world. These drums tend to depict animals with spiritual significance, including the wolf, often in connection with the shaman's journeys between worlds. The presence of a wolf on a drum may symbolize protection, strength, or the ability to move between dimensions.
In folk tales, the wolf features as an intelligent, cautious and sometimes dangerous creature. At the same time, it was respected as a competitor of man in hunting reindeer. This relationship was based on a balance between respect and fear.
