The wolf, known in Northern Sámi as gumpi, is perceived as a powerful symbol of wild nature, independence, and spiritual strength.
In traditional Sámi cosmology, the world is divided into several levels connected by spiritual forces. Animals in this system are not merely objects of hunting but carriers of spiritual essence. The wolf is understood as a being moving on the boundary between the human and non-human worlds. Its ability to survive in extreme northern conditions and its social structure in packs contribute to its symbolic meaning.
Wolf motifs also appear on shamanic drums (goavddis), which served as tools for communication with the spiritual world. These drums often depict animals of spiritual importance, including the wolf, frequently in connection with the shaman’s journeys between worlds. The presence of the wolf on a drum may symbolize protection, strength, and the ability to move between dimensions.
In folk narratives, the wolf appears as an intelligent, cautious, and sometimes dangerous creature. At the same time, it was respected as a competitor in reindeer hunting. This relationship was based on a balance between respect and fear.
