Medieval pilgrim badge, Netherlands, 1350-1400. Brass. Dimensions 35 × 30 mm.
This pilgrim badge dates from the second half of the 14th century and was made in what is now the Netherlands, then part of the prosperous region of Flanders. The badge is made of brass, suggesting that it may have been of higher value than the more common lead versions. The dimensions of 35 × 30 mm correspond to a typical format for wearing on a garment, hat or bag.
Badges of this type served pilgrims not only as evidence of a completed pilgrimage, but also as a protective amulet and often as a personal expression of faith or humour. In the area of the present-day Netherlands, their production and wearing was extremely popular, especially among townspeople and craftsmen.
