Iron hat - helmet with cheekpieces, medieval helmet, steel 1,6 mm
The kettle hat, also known as a war hat, is a simple helmet in the shape of a broad hat that came into use in the 13th century and was very popular with infantrymen, archers, crossbowmen, pikemen, and riflemen throughout Europe until the 15th century. It got its name from its resemblance to a kitchen kettle.
Although there were many variations of this helmet, they all shared a common basic element: a wide crepe that protected against slashing blows from above and projectiles fired or dropped from a height, while not restricting the wearer's vision, hearing or breathing. This practical design proved its worth in sieges and mass infantry battles, leading to the helmet's enduring popularity.
This recreation of a late medieval helmet is made of 1.6 mm (16 gauge) steel. The edge of the helmet is curved all around, and four bands or plates (called Spangen in German) are decoratively arranged in the shape of a cross on the top of the helmet. At the points of overlap the thickness of the material reaches more than 5 mm. Dark brown leather straps with a patinated brass buckle are attached to the cheekpieces.
The interior of the helmet is blackened for better corrosion resistance. The helmet is equipped with an adjustable, padded liner made of quality black fabric, fastened with rivets.
The helmet is suitable for light combat reenactments, LARP, theatrical performances or film/TV. It is best suited for the late medieval period and is a great addition to the armour of the European warrior. Of course, it is also a great addition to any historical helmet lover's collection.
