Nakiri Knife - Traditional Japanese Vegetable Knife
The Nakiri is a traditional Japanese kitchen knife designed primarily for preparing vegetables. Its wide, rectangular blade allows for quick and precise cutting, chopping, and slicing without the need for a rocking motion. The Nakiri is ideal for preparing all kinds of vegetables, herbs, and fruits, and thanks to its design, it produces clean cuts that help preserve the freshness and texture of the ingredients.
One of the Nakiri knife’s main advantages is its straight edge, which makes contact with the cutting board along the entire length of the blade. This allows for quick and even slicing without any uncut sections. The wide blade also makes it easy to transfer sliced ingredients from the cutting board to a pot or pan. The Nakiri is popular among professional chefs and home cooks who frequently prepare vegetable dishes.

The Origin of the Nakiri Knife
The name Nakiri (菜切包丁) comes from Japanese. The word na (菜) means “vegetables, ” while kiri (切り) means “to slice” or “to cut.” The literal meaning of the name is therefore “vegetable-cutting knife.” The Nakiri was developed as a specialized kitchen knife for the daily preparation of vegetables in Japanese households, and to this day it remains one of the most popular knives among those who appreciate precise, quick, and clean cuts.
