Julius Caesar (12 July 100 BC - 15 March 44 BC) was a Roman military leader and statesman. As a member of the First Triumvirate, he led the Roman armies in the Gallic Wars, then defeated his political rival Pompey in the Civil War, and then became dictator from 49 B.C. until his assassination in 44 B.C. He played a key role in the events that led to the demise of the Roman Republic and the formation of the Roman Empire.
