In ancient Rome, dice games were one of the most popular forms of entertainment. Romans played in taverns, marketplaces and during military campaigns and often gambled coins or small valuables during games. Particularly popular were the alea and tesserae games, which used dice made of bone, bronze or ivory. Although gambling was officially restricted outside of holidays, dice gained popularity across all social classes, from legionaries to emperors.
Famous finds from Pompeii, for example, where archaeologists have discovered dice and gaming boards preserved under a layer of ash after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Other dice have been found in Roman military fortresses along the borders of the empire, confirming the popularity of these games among the legionaries. Some of the surviving pieces are perfectly balanced, while others have been deliberately modified to cheat at play.
The leather cups helped protect the dice while ensuring a fair shuffle when thrown.
