The Lords of Lipá is an old Czech family, descended from the Ron family. A common ancestor was Smil Světlický, his grandson Chval of Lipé founded the castle and the town of Lipé. The family split into the Lipsko and Pirštejn branches.

Jan Ješek Ptáček of Pirkštejn (1338 - 1390) acquired the town of Rataje nad Sázavou with two castles, one of which he renamed Pirkštejn.

Jindřich of Lipá (son of Chval of Lipá), who ruled Žitava, was considered the second man of the country after the king in the 14th century.

He was one of the noblemen who brought John of Luxembourg to the Czech territory, John appointed him as a provincial governor and inherited the office of the highest marshal in the kingdom. Jan of Lipá commanded the army of Charles IV in Italy, where he fell.
