The Lords of Lipá is an old Czech noble family that descends from the Ronovci lineage. Their common ancestor was Smil Světlický, whose grandson, Chval of Lipá, founded the castle and town of Lipá. The family split into the Lipá and Pirkštejn branches.
Jan Ješek Ptáček of Pirkštejn (1338 – 1390) acquired the town of Rataje nad Sázavou with its two castles, renaming one of them to Pirkštejn.
Jindřich of Lipá (son of Chval of Lipá), who ruled Žitava, was considered the second most powerful man in the land after the king in the 14th century. He was one of the nobles who brought John of Luxembourg to the Czech lands. John appointed him as the provincial governor, and he inherited the office of the highest marshal in the kingdom.
Jan of Lipá commanded the army of Charles IV in Italy, where he fell in battle.
