This medieval pendant is based on the pilgrim's sign from Amsterdam, which dates from 1350-1449 AD. The original is now in the collection of the Beuningen family.
The inscription "Amours" is found on several bearing or pilgrimage signs from the Middle Ages and means love, suggesting that it could be used as a love gift between two lovers.
Unlike other rude badges from the same period, medieval badges with the inscription Amours are a serious version of love, designed with symbols of love such as crowned hearts, chaste busts, flowers and the like. The so-called courtly style, which was adopted by the lower social classes in the late Middle Ages, was portrayed in generally understandable iconography.
