Medieval smoked pottery is a type of pottery that was produced during the Middle Ages using a special firing technique in kilns, where smoke entered the walls of the vessel during the process. This method of production was used to achieve the black appearance and properties of the pottery.
During production, the vessels were fired in an environment with limited access to oxygen, which led to soot and other fumes from the smoke being deposited in the ceramic material. This smoking process caused the pottery to darken in colour - from brown to black - and the surface acquired the typical smoky stains and sometimes a dull or glossy appearance.
Medieval smoked pottery had a variety of uses, often used as tableware, kitchenware, food trays or ceremonial vessels.
