Medieval needle with ball head and filigree decoration

Here you can buy a medieval ball-headed needle, made according to historical models of needles for fastening scarves from the Middle Ages.

Ball-headed needles were widely used in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, from the Anglo-Saxon needles of the early Middle Ages to the richly filigreed needles of the Tudor period.

This medieval needlepoint is made from a high quality metal alloy and is strong enough not to bend in use. The point is very sharp and slides easily through fabric.

The scarf needle is 7 cm long including the ball head, the diameter of the ball is 1,2 cm.

In the Middle Ages, women often wore headscarves to tame their hair during daily work and protect it from dirt and parasites. Depending on the period and cultural area, different lengths of needle were used to fasten them.

Needles were also used to fasten the veil and in the High Middle Ages, the ' wrap-around veil ' was wrapped tightly around the head and chin and fixed with small needles to symbolise a woman's chastity and dignity.
