The Animus Codicis (Soul of the Codex) badge occupies a very special place in this series, because it is the only one that is not based on small marginalia in the margins of the pages, but on one of the most famous and iconic full-page illuminations of medieval art. It is based on a portrait from the mysterious Codex Gigas (known as the Devil's Bible), the largest surviving manuscript in the world, which was created in the early 13th century in the Benedictine monastery of Podlažice in Bohemia. This monumental codex is fascinating in its dimensions - it measures 92 cm in height, weighs an impressive 75 kg, and the skins of more than 160 donkeys were used to make its parchment pages. According to legend, the book was written in a single night by a sinful monk who wanted to avoid the cruel punishment of death for breaking his monastic vows. When he discovered at midnight that he could not do the task alone, he sold his soul to the Prince of Hell himself in exchange for help in completing the work. The resulting scene is fascinating in that although the creature has terrifying attributes - horns, claws, a green face and two tongues - it does not act merely as a monster, but rather as a guardian of all the wisdom hidden in the book. Moreover, the portrait is placed directly opposite the depiction of the Kingdom of Heaven in the manuscript, creating a striking symbolic contrast between good and evil. This unique and legendary piece of history, now housed in the National Library in Stockholm, can adorn your clothing in the form of a meticulously laser-engraved and detailed hand-painted oak plywood badge.
