This Roman pendant in the shape of a Caesar (flan) gold coin is made of lead-free pewter and plated with 22k gold. The coin is set into a handle and comes on a gold chain. The pendant is mounted on a folding information card, which features a gold coin and Medusa's head on the front with a decorative design on the sides. On the reverse, the card describes that decorated Roman jewellery was initially rare and was influenced by other cultures.
This beautiful hand-cast collection is inspired by jewellery found in ancient Rome. Richly decorated jewellery was initially rare due to the scarcity of gold, but as the empire expanded, trade routes expanded and new territories were conquered, precious metals and stones became more readily available.
Roman jewellery was usually made of gold or silver and bore influences from Greek and Etruscan culture. New designs were adopted from other cultures and remained firmly established throughout the Roman period.
