This Roman Medusa pendant is made of lead-free pewter. The pendant comes on a silver chain. Medusa was the most famous of the creatures known as Gorgons. It was usually depicted as a winged female figure with hair made up of snakes. The pendant is mounted on a folding information card which has a gold coin and Medusa's head on the front with a decorative design on the sides. On the back, the card describes that decorated Roman jewellery was initially rare and was influenced by other cultures.

This beautiful hand-cast collection is inspired by jewellery found in ancient Rome. Richly decorated jewellery was initially rare due to the scarcity of gold, but as the empire expanded, trade routes expanded and new territories were conquered, precious metals and stones became more readily available.

Roman jewellery was usually made of gold or silver and bore influences from Greek and Etruscan culture. New designs were adopted from other cultures and remained firmly established throughout the Roman period.
