The development of European helmets in the 16th and 17th centuries was greatly influenced by the wars with the Ottoman Empire. European soldiers became familiar with Oriental assault helmets, which they adopted and adapted to their own needs. Most of these Oriental helmets were manufactured in German centres in Augsburg and Nuremberg. The head was protected at the sides by movable cheekpieces and fitted with sound holes. The back of the head was protected by a wide movable cover made of several steel slats. One of the variants worn by cuirassiers under the command of General Count G. H. Pappenheim (1594-1632), was particularly popular.
