The poem "In Flanders Fields" was written by Canadian military doctor and officer John McCrae in 1915 during the First World War. He was inspired by the sight of the graves of fallen soldiers in Flanders, Belgium, with poppies blooming among them. The poem has become one of the best-known symbols of remembrance of war veterans, and it is because of it that the wolf poppy is used as a symbol of respect for the fallen.
