This Roman dolphin-shaped pendant is made of lead-free pewter. The dolphin comes on a waxed cord. The pendant is mounted on a folding information card, which has a Roman mosaic motif on the front and on the reverse describes how the wealthy Romans liked to wear jewellery and how animal motifs were used as decoration.
In ancient times , rich Romans liked to wear jewellery made of gold and silver and decorated with pearls and coloured glass. These included earrings, bracelets, amulets, necklaces, pendants, cameos, rings and various types of hair ornaments.
Animal motifs were used in architecture, art, mosaics and on tombstones. The most popular animals were horses, dogs, lions and elephants; of the sea creatures, dolphins, fish, octopuses and turtles; of birds, owls, peacocks, parrots and ducks.
Many of these animals were kept as pets, served as symbols of social status, or were considered delicacies on the dinner table.
