This "Tommy" helmet badge is made of lead-free pewter and shows the side profile of the helmet. It comes on a pin with a separate clasp. The Tommy helmet has been designed to protect against shrapnel striking from above. The badge is mounted on an information card which has a colour picture of British soldiers, an aircraft and a tank on the front along with a red poppy. The reverse side contains historical information about trench warfare in the First World War.
Thousands of miles of parallel trenches were dug on the Western Front during the First World War. Trench warfare was necessary because the strength, speed and accuracy of the weapons on both sides made fighting in the open impossible. Various new weapons were introduced, including hand grenades, battle gases, trench mortars, tanks, and artillery barrage. These weapons caused the deaths of millions of people in one of the bloodiest wars the world has ever seen.
