This Great Helm badge is made of metal with gold detailing to accentuate its design. It comes on a pin with a separate clasp. The badge is mounted on an information card which has a picture of a medieval shield on the front, three lions in the middle and medieval style floral ornaments on the sides. On the reverse side there is historical information on heraldic motifs, including lions and dragons.
In the Middle Ages, knights in armour decorated their shields with heraldic emblems. These were used to identify them on the battlefield or during tournaments. The most popular heraldic motifs included animals and mythological creatures, fleur-de-lis, crowns and floral designs.
Lions and dragons were probably among the oldest motifs in heraldry. The lion traditionally symbolised courage, bravery, strength and royal dignity, while the dragon represented power, wisdom and cleverness.
Crown motifs were often associated with royal power, and the fleur-de-lis was used as a symbol of France.
