Pencil with a three-dimensional poppy flower topper made from lead-free pewter. The red pencil is 13 cm long and features the inscription “World War I 1914–18” in black, alongside silhouettes of British troops, some carrying a wounded comrade.
After the First World War, the poppy became a symbol of remembrance for the fallen. Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, who served in the war, was inspired by the sight of poppies growing in battle-scarred fields to write his now-famous poem “In Flanders Fields”. Its opening lines refer to the many poppies that were the first flowers to bloom in the churned-up earth among soldiers’ graves in Flanders, a region of Belgium.
