This Roman brooch in the shape of a deer is made of metal in a golden hue and decorated with red and dark blue enamel. The back features a brooch clasp for attaching it to clothing. It comes in a gift box along with a card providing historical information.
The brooch is modeled after a design found on a 3rd-century Roman belt buckle. On the original, the motif is engraved into the surface and inlaid with enamel and glass. The brooch depicts a deer in a graceful leap.
During the Roman period, a number of non-native animal species were introduced to Northern Europe, including the European fallow deer (Dama dama). Wealthy Romans adorned the gardens of their villas with statues of deer. The deer motif also appears on pottery and Roman coins.
