This Roman owl-shaped brooch is made of metal and decorated with colored enamel. It features a brooch clasp on the back for attaching it to clothing. It comes in a gift box along with a card containing historical information.
This brooch is modeled after a 2nd-century Roman owl-shaped clasp, known as a fibula, inlaid with enamel and glass.
The brooch, in a golden hue, depicts an owl from a front view. The wings and large round eyes are panels filled with enamel. The motif is complemented by a protruding beak and intricate details of the tail feathers. A very similar original was found in the 1970s near the city of Bath in the English county of Somerset.
For Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, the owl is a sacred animal, and Hypnos, the god of sleep, often takes on its form. During the Roman period, owls appeared in mosaics, on coins, and as part of architectural decoration.
