Late Roman spatha (Straubing-Nydam type), 3rd century

Probably due to the influence of barbarians or Germanic tribes, not only the fighting technique but also the shape of the sword changed towards the end of the 2nd century AD. Blades became longer and swords began to be worn on the left side. Roman spaths of the Straubing-Nydam type are characterised by their narrow and long shape.

This replica is based on originals found in southern Germany, dating from around the 3rd century.

The blade is made of steel. The hilt is made of bone and brass. The wooden scabbard is covered with leather and has authentic brass decorations riveted to the surface.
