The French army based the design of this sword on the famous and effective Roman sword, the gladius, the standard short sword of the Roman legionaries. Although it could be used in combat in an emergency situation, it was primarily used as a machete to clear fields for gun emplacements. Its versatility earned it the nickname "coupe-chou" (loosely translated as "cabbage chopper"). The 1831 remained in service until 1870, and its design was inspired by the US to create the 1832 infantry artillery sword model.
