Silver torques (neckpiece) based on a Viking bracelet found on the island of Gotland (Sweden), Burg locality.
Torques is the Latin word for necklace, the common name for all fixed necklaces in the form of metal rings worn around the neck. It has been known since the Bronze Age, was favoured by the Romans and is also considered a typical Celtic artefact. This jewellery was a religious and secular badge of power, worship and protection, worn by gods and goddesses, heroes, warriors, princesses and princes; it was a sign of high social status and the jewellery of prominent women.
