The national emblem of Ukraine, called the Tryzub (Ukrainian: Тризуб, Czech: trojzub) depicts a falcon in a dive flight. The falcon is an ancient symbol representing the Sun. It symbolizes intuition, strength and courage. The Slavs considered themselves warriors of the Light, and the symbol of the falcon was very popular with them (the southern Slavs called their heroes "falcons"). The falcon was the coat of arms of the Ruriks. It first appeared in Ukraine on gold and silver coins minted under Prince Vladimir.
