A replica of a Viking bone pin, based on a find from Trondheim, Norway dating back to the 11th century.

Pins and decorative pins made of bone were very common in Viking times and were a cheaper alternative to expensive bronze and silver decorative pins and brooches.

Bone pins are therefore found throughout the Viking settlement area between 800 and 1100 AD and are known from sites such as Birka, Haithabu, York and Trondheim.

This Viking bone pin is decorated with a finely carved Urnes-style motif. The pins were used by the Vikings to fasten their cloaks, but also served as hairpins.

The replica of a Viking pin from Trondheim measures approximately 16 x 3 cm.
