Type M is a variant of the Viking sword that forms a stage between type F and type Q. It is characterized by a simple hilt that resembles the shape of the letter I. The guard and pommel are generally straight.
- Material: 54SiCr6 spring steel
- Hardened to approx. 52-54 HRC
- Made in our forge
- Total length: 90 cm
The pommel is formed by a simple, guard-like crossbar. The important element is the undecorated hilt. The blades are usually double-edged. We also know of swords from Norway and Sweden that were made using the welded damascus method.
Swords of type M largely come from Norway, where about 400 swords of this type are recorded, other finds come from Sweden, Iceland, Finland, Ireland, France, Germany, Poland and the Baltic States.
Petersen believes that the first swords of this type appeared in Norway in the mid-9th century and persisted until the early 10th century.
They are simple and widespread swords, especially in graves from mountainous areas.
