Water goblins are among the best-known beings of Slavic mythology. According to folk legends, they live in ponds, rivers, and lakes, where they guard their watery realm. They are often depicted as small men with green hair, a coat made of reeds, and red boots. Stories say they keep the souls of drowned people in little mugs and carefully store them on shelves in their underwater dwelling. Although they are often portrayed as dangerous, they are not always evil – sometimes they help millers or fishermen if treated with kindness.
