Vodnik is a water spirit from Slavic folklore. He inhabits ponds, rivers, streams and lakes. It resembles the German nixie or the Scottish kelpie. Water maidens and rusalka appear in his company.

He is described as an elderly man with green hair and beard. He may be holding a magic wand which he uses to control the water. If he transforms into a human, water drips from his suit. He often transforms into animals - frogs and fish.

He lives in the watery depths near the water mills. If he is in the water, he has supernatural powers, but on land he is weak, so he avoids it. Watermen keep the souls of the drowned in cups. He can also help fishermen by chasing fish into their nets.
