War hammers
The combat hammer (or war hammer) is a medieval weapon primarily designed to penetrate armor. It was effective due to both the spike on one side and the flat side, which caused deformation of the opponent's armor. There were one-handed and two-handed variants of the combat hammer. It was most commonly used in battles between armored foot soldiers during the Middle Ages. The combat hammer became one of the most common weapons in Western and Central Europe. Mounted combat hammers typically had a handle about 50 cm long. In battles, two-handed versions were also used, with handles up to 200 cm long.
Medieval War Hammers: A Historical Weapon That Dominated the Battlefield
War hammers were among the primary weapons of the medieval era. This weapon, often referred to as the combat hammer, was designed to effectively counter heavy armor that common swords failed to penetrate. Thanks to its simple yet efficient design, war hammers became a popular choice among both foot soldiers and cavalry.
Battlefield Usage
War hammers found their primary use between the 13th and 15th centuries when knightly armor reached the peak of its development. Foot soldiers facing heavily armored cavalry used war hammers to unseat enemies and attack the weak points of their gear.
In hand-to-hand combat, the combination of agility and the hammer’s effectiveness was indispensable. War hammers were especially favored by the Hussites, who used them to successfully confront heavily armored Crusaders.
