Bronze belt mount depicting a hare armed with a sword and buckler. The design draws on medieval marginalia – small drawings in the margins of manuscripts featuring fantastic animals, caricatures and scenes that turn the established order of the world upside down. The hare, usually hunted as prey, takes on the role of a warrior.
The motif is loosely based on an illustration of a hare and a hound fighting with swords and shields from the winter portion of the Breviary of Renaud de Bar, created in Metz, France, in 1302–1303.
