Buckler is a small shield with a diameter of 15-45 cm. The use of these shields was particularly prominent in the Middle Ages, especially in the 13th and 14th centuries. They were also used in the Baroque and Renaissance periods.

In the fencing manual I.33 from the Tower Armouries (Leeds), the fist shield was used together with a one-handed sword. Buckler was primarily used as a defensive tool but could also be used offensively, especially targeting the opponent's head. Fist shields were made from various materials - metal and wood with a wooden grip. Unusual shapes of pavises can be found in Hans Talhoffer's fencing manual.
