Chodsko jug – hand-painted pottery.
Traditional Chodsko pottery is one of the distinctive expressions of folk culture in western Bohemia. This ceramic jug, measuring 14 cm in height, is decorated with hand-painted traditional floral and plant motifs. Thanks to the handmade decoration, each piece is unique, and slight variations in the design or colours are a natural feature of the product.

Each hand-painted piece is unique
Chodsko is a historical and ethnographic region in southwestern Bohemia along the border with Bavaria. Its natural centre is the Domažlice region, particularly the town of Domažlice and the surrounding Chod villages. To this day, the region has preserved a strong local identity, including its own dialect, folk costumes, music, traditional crafts and rich ornamental decoration.
The region takes its name from the Chods (Czech: Chodové), inhabitants of the borderlands of the medieval Kingdom of Bohemia who performed special duties, particularly guarding and controlling the kingdom's frontier. In return for their services, they received numerous privileges from the Bohemian rulers. Their later struggle to preserve these rights became an important part of Czech historical tradition and is famously associated with the story of Jan Sladký Kozina.
Chodsko pottery is characterised by distinctive floral and plant motifs painted freehand. Alongside multicoloured decoration, the traditional-looking blue-and-white colour combination is also used, as seen on this jug.
Chodsko pottery is therefore not only a practical object but also a reminder of the unique culture of one of the Czech Republic's most distinctive ethnographic regions.
